Yesterday we walked into the small city of Burgos. We took a longer way in which was along the river in a nature preserve instead of through the industrial park. It was much more enjoyable and we needed the shade. Even with my spf50 I can feel the sun damaging my face and arms. I don’t know why it is so strong here! James ended up jumping in to the river off a small bridge to cool down, but it was still a long trek for both of us. We also walked through a huge flock of sheep! There don’t seem to be many crops growing here, and I’m surprised we haven’t seen more livestock.

We had a great time last night, meeting up with other friends who we haven’t seen for a couple of days and making some new ones! First we had a cold beer in front of this incredible cathedral. James said it was more impressive to him than the Notre Dame.

A big group of us went out for tapas and then just me, James, and our new friend Alice (from England) went for churros (and chocolate) and a nightcap. We found a little place and sat upstairs on couches across from two tables of old ladies playing a card game and gambling. I love the culture here; the old and the young are all still out and about and really living their lives. I asked the owner what the locals drink with their churros and he cracked a bottle of some liquor that is made at the monastery in town. And he had a drink with us! Was a wonderful evening.

We were planning to have an easy day today but decided to just stay here and really have a rest day. We went inside the cathedral this morning and then wandered around, did a few errands and drank some beer. Now we’re resting until dinner. I felt pretty guilty this morning, and really weird not to be walking. But when I remember waking up at 3 am this morning with achy hips and legs I know that my body will appreciate it. And really there is no reason not to rest! I have nowhere to be!
