French tortilla?

A quick post (since I wrote so much yesterday!!) so far nothing today has gone as expected! When I got up for breakfast Maria was already out but she left a mug, orange juice, and some muffins out. I didn’t have any coffee yesterday so I really needed it this morning. I finally figured out that there was a jar of instant coffee on the counter (disappointment #1) and then, under further inspection it turned out to be some kind of fake caffeine free instant coffee (disappointment #2!!)!

When Maria came back she offered to walk me around a bit and show me where the school was. Well, that was so nice but it blew my go-find-coffee-right-this-moment plan. So we went walking, slowly, and she showed me the pharmacy, the grocery store, etc. i had no idea where we were going to. We keep walking, and it turns out she was taking me to the National museum which has about 200 steps. There are some escalators, but even those had stairs on the other side! Very weird.

She left me there and I poked around a bit but didn’t want to pay the 30 euro to get in when I knew I should rest and elevate my knee soon. On my way back I found a little restaurant and sat down. But there was no menu, just a bunch of boards, and the waitress spoke the fastest Spanish I’ve ever heard. And no coffee in the afternoons. Anyway, I managed to order something that said ‘tortilla frances’ meaning French tortilla, figuring that was safe. I was delivered an egg and tomato sandwich and a coke.

At least it is finally sunny today!

Egg, tomato sandwich with cok e? THAT is Real Disappointment. Unless you’re starving. Where are all the tapas? The Riojas? I actually went to a fantastic Spanish dinner at Dano’s last night and thought of you. You’re missing a big part of Barcelona if you’re eating E-T sandwiches. See if you can hobble down a different street and find those delectable chorizos and croquetas, the rellenos and arroz negro with aioli? Torrijas. That might put a smile on your face.

I know! What a disappointment! Although I was super hungry and it did its job. Finally did get some tapas today for lunch, nothing too crazy though. Update to come. The thing is, I don’t eat pork which appears to be the main item in a lot of stuff here! Chorizo, croquettes… Lots of ham. But I did see a few interesting beans, and seafoods…

Ah come on, I bet the egg and tomato sandwich was just like Downhome Deli!! 🙂 Keep your chin up, if everything went as planned, it wouldn’t be as fun!! Still miss you!
