These are some of the words we have used to describe yesterday: huge, incredible, awe-inducing, ridiculous, gorgeous, the most beautiful thing we will ever see. We hiked up to Preikestolen, or Pulpit Rock, which is a small mountain plateau with an almost 2000 ft vertical drop down to the water in the fjord below. It is one of the most famous sites in Norway, and is the one place my co-worker Bill said I must go to. And he was right. The entire hike up was absolutely gorgeous, varying between dense woods, wetlands, and bare rock face.

After the 2 hour hike we reached a summit and could see the Lysefjord gaping in front of us. We had the best weather we could possible ask for; blue skies, blue water.

Everywhere we looked was just jaw-droppingly beautiful. And the Preikestolen formation proved to be the best of all. There is a deep crack that you have to leap over (a little unnerving) and then there’s nothing but the air and the water and the rock. We hung out for about an hour, getting braver and braver and finally scooting close enough to the edge to hang our feet over. What a rush!

When we did finally start making our way back down, we both felt sad to be leaving that place behind. We joked the whole day about going back up. It could be sad, knowing that we’ve seen one of the most beautiful things on the planet, and few sights will be as impressive. I prefer to hold on to the awe and think about what it will be like to come back in 30 years and find it exactly as I left it.
