I certainly do not want to discourage anyone from responsible individual actions, but I do worry that responsible personal behavior is sometimes considered as meeting our collective responsibilities as humankind. The unfortunate reality is that it will take our collective actions, sometimes coerced, to save this planet – and that means political responsibility. Our collective individual actions can, in total, become meaningless by the actions of a single global corporation.
It is easy to become jaundiced by the ugliness of politics and the ability of corporations to prevent effective government actions to protect our environment. Individual decisions are essential, but they are not a substitute for our collective mobilization and advocacy for national and international government actions.
I don’t mean to be discouraging as there is basis for optimism. California has now passed a carbon tax and created economic incentives for responsible – and self-interested – corporate behavior. So, Nicole, while on your trek, give some thought to how you can apply your education and values in support of a NGO or other research or advocacy group following your return.
Well, OK, not a lot of thought – stay in the present tense and just soak it all in – it will make sense later!
